The journey to Fairy Meadows is half the experience. You leave the Karakoram Highway at Raikot Bridge, ride a local jeep up a narrow mountain track, then walk through forest to a meadow at about 3,300 m beneath Nanga Parbat. This guide explains each step.
In this guide
Step 1: Raikot Bridge
Raikot Bridge is on the Karakoram Highway, beyond Chilas. Most travellers arrive after an overnight stop in Chilas or Naran, and it is usually about 1.5–2 hours from Chilas. Only local jeeps are allowed on the track from here.
Step 2: The jeep ride to Tato
The jeep ride takes around 1.5–2 hours and climbs a narrow, unpaved, exposed track to the village of Tato (or the nearest jeep road-head). Drivers are experienced and travel it daily, but it can be intimidating. Sit in the middle if you are afraid of heights.
Step 3: The walk
From the road-head the hike to Fairy Meadows takes roughly 2.5–4 hours depending on fitness, on a well-trodden path through forest and a few steeper sections. Ponies can carry luggage and sometimes riders.
| Stage | Approx. time |
|---|---|
| Chilas → Raikot Bridge | 1.5–2 hours |
| Raikot Bridge → road-head | 1.5–2 hours |
| Road-head → Fairy Meadows | 2.5–4 hours on foot |
At Fairy Meadows
- Wooden cottages and camps run by local families.
- Limited electricity (often solar or generator) and little or no mobile signal.
- Sunrise on Nanga Parbat — the reason most people come.
- Beyal Camp and the base camp trek — see our Nanga Parbat Base Camp guide.
When to go
Mid-June to September is the main season. In May, snow remains and many cottages are closed; in winter the meadow is deep in snow.
Preparing
- Pack light and use a small daypack; send heavier bags up by pony or porter.
- Bring warm layers, a rain jacket, comfortable boots and a headlamp.
- Carry cash for jeeps, porters and meals.
- Check weather — rain makes the jeep track risky.
Is it for you?
If you are fit, comfortable with basic accommodation and happy with an adventurous road, yes. If heights frighten you or you travel with very young children, think carefully. See our Fairy Meadows guide and the 5-day Fairy Meadows itinerary.
What to pack for the climb
- A small daypack; send bigger bags by pony or porter.
- Hiking boots or sturdy shoes, plus warm socks.
- Warm jacket, rain jacket, hat and gloves.
- Water, snacks and cash.
- Torch or headlamp and a power bank.
Common mistakes
- Packing too much and struggling on the climb.
- Starting the hike too late and arriving after dark.
- Ignoring altitude and sleeping with a headache.
- Expecting hotel-level comfort at cottages.
Should you stay two nights?
Yes, if you can. The first day is tiring, and a second night lets you see Nanga Parbat at sunrise, walk to Beyal and rest properly before the descent.
