Autumn is Hunza’s quiet masterpiece. After the summer crowds leave, apricot, poplar and willow trees turn gold, orange and red, and the clear air makes the mountains look closer than ever.

When do the colours peak?

The colour typically builds through October and peaks in late October into early November, depending on altitude and that year’s weather. Higher villages change first; lower ones follow. After the first strong winds, leaves fall quickly, so timing matters.

What the weather is like

October days are bright and often warm in the sun, but nights are cold. By November it is distinctly wintry. Skies are generally clear, which makes it excellent for photography.

Practical tips

Photography notes

Shoot early or late, use the mountains as a backdrop and include the poplar-lined lanes of Altit and Ganish. A polarising filter helps with the sky and lake reflections. Read our photography guide for more locations.

Prefer a different season? See the spring blossom guide or the full weather by month. For a complete plan, see our Hunza page.

A three-day autumn route

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Karimabad, walk Altit and Baltit lanes in the afternoon light.
  2. Day 2: Drive to Attabad, Passu and Gulmit with long stops for colour.
  3. Day 3: Slow morning, Nagar viewpoints or Borith Lake, then start back.
