Every spring, Hunza’s orchards burst into white and pale pink. It is among the most beautiful times to visit — and one of the hardest to time exactly, because the bloom depends on that year’s winter and spring.

When does the blossom peak?
Blossom usually begins in the lower villages in late March and peaks in early to mid-April. Higher villages bloom a week or two later. A late cold spell can delay it; a warm spring can bring it forward. Nearby valleys such as Nagar and Skardu follow a similar pattern at their own altitudes.
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Late March | First flowers in the lowest villages |
| Early–mid April | Usual peak in Aliabad, Karimabad and Altit |
| Mid–late April | Higher villages and Gojal begin to bloom |
| May | Petals fall; trees turn green |
Where to see the blossom
- Altit and Karimabad — orchards climb the slopes beneath the forts.
- Ganish village — one of the oldest settlements, with stone lanes and orchards.
- Aliabad and Hyderabad — easy to reach from the highway.
- Nagar valley — across the river, with views of the orchards from Hopar and Hoper.
Weather and crowds
April days are mild and nights cool. There are far fewer visitors than in summer, so hotels are easier to book. Bring a warm layer and a light rain jacket.
Planning tips
- Plan for flexibility: if you can add a spare day, you are more likely to catch the peak.
- Ask your hotel or us about current bloom conditions a few days before you travel.
- Combine with the forts — see Baltit and Altit.
- Take it slowly: lanes in Altit and Ganish are best explored on foot.
- Remember that this is private farmland: do not pick fruit or climb into orchards without permission.
The blossom is a short season. For the autumn counterpart, see Hunza in autumn. For a full trip plan, start with our Hunza guide.
A two-day blossom plan
- Day 1 morning: Altit village and Royal Garden for the main orchards.
- Day 1 afternoon: Baltit Fort and Karimabad, then sunset from a high viewpoint.
- Day 2 morning: Ganish and Aliabad lanes in early light.
- Day 2 afternoon: Cross to Nagar for a view back at the valley, if time allows.
Photography tips for blossom
- Overcast, soft light often suits white blossom; harsh midday sun washes it out.
- Use mountains or the fort as a backdrop to give scale.
- Bring a light jacket — mornings are cool.
Respecting orchards
Orchards are family livelihoods. Do not pick flowers, shake branches or step on terraces without permission, and keep to paths. A polite greeting often leads to an invitation to look more closely.
