Naltar is a side valley about 35–40 km from Gilgit, climbing through pine forest to a string of strikingly coloured lakes. It is a favourite with people who want a quieter, greener alternative to the main Hunza route, and it adds a half or full day to a Gilgit stop.

How to reach it
Take the road from Gilgit towards Nomal and follow signs for Naltar. The valley road is rough, narrow and steep in places; 4×4 vehicles are recommended, and the drive takes longer after rain.
When to go
- May–June: green and fresh; some snow at higher points.
- July–August: warm and busy.
- September–October: clear skies and autumn colours — the best photography.
- Winter: snow; accessible with a 4×4 and caution.
Where to stay
There are guesthouses and a few small hotels in the valley, mostly simple. Many visitors do it as a day trip from Gilgit; staying overnight gives you the lakes in quiet.
