Skardu rewards time. Its highlights are spread around a wide valley and its side valleys, and the star attraction — the Deosai Plains — is a full day on its own. Here is how we plan Skardu for different trip lengths.
In this guide
How many days do you need in Skardu?
| Trip length | Getting there | What you can cover |
|---|---|---|
| 3 days | Fly both ways | Shangrila, Kachura lakes, Katpana and Shigar |
| 5 days | Fly both ways | Add Deosai (in season) and Khaplu |
| 7 days | Drive both ways, or fly one way | Everything above, plus the drive along the Indus |
| 9–12 days | Road and/or air | Skardu plus Hunza, or Astore and the Deosai crossing |
Mountain flights are sometimes cancelled, so every by-air plan should keep a spare day at the end. More on that in Skardu by road or by air.
3-day Skardu itinerary (by air)
- Day 1: Morning flight to Skardu. Afternoon at Shangrila and Lower Kachura Lake; sunset at the Katpana cold desert.
- Day 2: Upper Kachura Lake by boat in the morning, then Shigar Fort and village in the afternoon.
- Day 3: Skardu Fort (Kharpocho) or Satpara Lake in the morning, then fly back.
Good for: couples and short breaks. Trade-off: no Deosai, and no buffer if your flight is cancelled.
5-day Skardu itinerary (by air) — our favourite
- Day 1: Fly to Skardu; Shangrila and Lower Kachura.
- Day 2: Upper Kachura; afternoon in Skardu bazaar; Katpana at sunset.
- Day 3: Deosai National Park by jeep via Satpara: Bara Pani and Sheosar Lake (usually mid-June to September). Outside the season, swap for Manthokha Waterfall.
- Day 4: Khaplu Palace and the Chaqchan Mosque, or Shigar with a night in the fort.
- Day 5: Fly back — ideally with an extra day spare before any international connection.
7-day Skardu itinerary (by road)
- Day 1: Islamabad to Chilas (via Naran and Babusar in summer, or via Besham).
- Day 2: Chilas to Skardu along the Indus gorge on the Skardu Road.
- Day 3: Shangrila, Kachura lakes, Katpana.
- Day 4: Deosai (in season) or Manthokha.
- Day 5: Shigar and Khaplu.
- Day 6: Skardu to Chilas or Naran.
- Day 7: Return to Islamabad.
Flying one way and driving the other saves a day and still shows you the Karakoram Highway.
Timing Deosai
Deosai is a high plateau above 4,000 m. It is usually accessible from around mid-June until early autumn snow, with wildflowers at their best in July and August. It is a long, cold, bumpy day — bring warm layers, snacks and sunscreen, and travel in a proper jeep.
In summer you can also enter Skardu through Deosai from Astore — a superb route described in our Astore Valley guide.
Where to stay
- Skardu town for convenience and choice.
- Shangrila or Kachura for lakeside calm.
- Shigar Fort or Khaplu Palace for a night in restored Balti heritage.
For background on each place, see our Skardu travel guide — or send us your dates and we will tailor one of these plans.
Frequently asked questions
Is 3 days enough for Skardu?
Only if you fly, and you will miss Deosai. Five days by air is the sweet spot.
Can I do Deosai as a day trip from Skardu?
Yes. Most visitors do it as a long day by jeep via Satpara, returning to Skardu in the evening.
What is the best month for a Skardu trip?
July to September if you want Deosai; May–June and October for quieter lakes and valleys.
