Islamabad is one of the few capitals in the world with real mountains on its doorstep. Here are ten escapes for a day or a weekend, ordered roughly from easiest to most adventurous. Travel times are typical for a private vehicle outside peak traffic.

1. Nathia Gali and the Pipeline Track

About 2–2.5 hours · all year. Walk the mostly level Pipeline Track between Dunga Gali and Ayubia through pine and oak forest, then relax in Nathia Gali. Easy for families. See Murree & Galiyat.

2. Mushkpuri Top

About 2–2.5 hours · March–November. A steady 1.5–2 hour hike from Dunga Gali to open meadows with views towards Kashmir. One of the best short hikes near the capital.

3. Murree and Patriata

About 1–1.5 hours · all year. The Mall Road, viewpoints and the chairlift and cable car at Patriata. Go midweek or early morning; in snow season, follow official advisories.

4. Pir Chinasi

About 3–3.5 hours · March–November. A hilltop shrine and viewpoint above Muzaffarabad, with sweeping views of the Jhelum and Neelum valleys. Easily a day trip.

5. Toli Pir and Banjosa Lake

About 3–4 hours · April–October. Rolling meadows near Rawalakot in Azad Kashmir and a forest lake at Banjosa. Best as an overnight trip.

6. Shogran and Siri Paye

About 4.5–5 hours · May–October. Forest hotels at Shogran, then a jeep to the meadows of Siri Paye with views of Makra Peak. A great two-day trip in the Kaghan Valley.

7. Sharan Forest and Manshi Top

About 5 hours plus jeep · May–October. A quiet forest clearing above Paras, with bonfires, stars and a sunrise hike to Manshi Top. Read our Sharan Forest guide.

8. Khanpur Lake

About 1–1.5 hours · spring to autumn. Boating and water sports on a reservoir lake near Taxila — a summer favourite for groups of friends.

9. The Salt Range: Khewra and Kallar Kahar

About 2.5–3 hours · October–March is most comfortable. Tour the vast Khewra Salt Mine, then visit Kallar Kahar Lake. A good cool-season option when the hills are cold.

10. Swat in a long weekend

About 4 hours to Mingora · April–October. With the Swat Motorway, a three-day trip to Malam Jabba or Kalam is realistic. See Swat & Kalam.
