Swat and Naran–Kaghan are the two valleys most Pakistani travellers think of first. Both are within a day’s drive of Islamabad, both are green and cool in summer, and both have famous lakes. Which one is right for you depends on your dates and priorities.

Common mistakes

- Expecting Saiful Muluk or Babusar to be open in May.
- Riverbank stays in Swat during monsoon rain.
Can you do both?
Yes, but they are on opposite sides of the Indus. With seven or more days you can combine them or add Neelum. See our seasonal guide.

A quick decision tool
- If your dates are April–May or September–October, choose Swat.
- If your dates are June–August and you want high lakes, choose Naran–Kaghan.
- If you have young children or older parents, Swat is usually easier because of the motorway and wider choice of hotels.
- If you want to continue north to Hunza or Fairy Meadows, Naran–Kaghan with Babusar is the natural route in summer.
Cost considerations
Hotel prices in both valleys rise sharply in peak summer. Swat offers a wider range of budget options and a longer season; Naran’s season is short, so prices peak accordingly. We quote both with your exact dates so you can compare.
Combining both
You can add Kaghan after Swat by returning to Islamabad and heading up the Hazara side, or reverse the order. It takes a full day to switch valleys, so allow at least seven days for both.
