Mahodand Lake lies in the Ushu Valley above Kalam, at around 2,900 m. It is a long, clear lake surrounded by pine forest and snow-capped peaks, and it is the day trip that most visitors to Kalam come for.

Getting there
From Kalam, a rough road climbs through Ushu village and forest to the lake — roughly 35–40 km and about 2 hours each way by jeep. Regular cars cannot manage it. Local jeeps are available in Kalam; we arrange them in advance for groups.
Note that sections of the road have been damaged in past floods and repair work continues, so conditions and travel times vary.
When is it open?
The road opens when snow clears, usually from around June, and stays open until autumn. In spring, parts of the track can still be snowbound or muddy.
What to do
- Boating. Short rides on small boats are available in season.
- Fishing. The lake and its streams hold trout; permits and rules apply.
- Horse riding. Often available near the lake.
- Picnic and walks. Open meadows around the shore.
- Camping. Possible with arrangements and warm gear; nights are cold.
Combine with
- Ushu forest — dense pines and streams on the way up.
- Gabral and Utror valleys — quieter side valleys.
- Kundol Lake from Utror, a forest hike for fit travellers.
What to bring
- Warm jacket and rain layer — mountain weather changes quickly.
- Motion-sickness remedy for the bumpy road.
- Packed lunch or cash for local restaurants.
- Power bank; signal is patchy.
