Chitral sits in the far north-west of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, behind the Hindu Kush. For decades the Lowari Pass cut it off for months each winter. The Lowari Tunnel, about 8.5 km long and opened in 2017, changed that — and today Chitral is a long but straightforward trip from Islamabad.

By road

  1. Islamabad to Chakdara by motorway and the Swat Expressway.
  2. Chakdara to Dir through Timergara.
  3. Dir to Chitral through the Lowari Tunnel.

By air

Flights between Islamabad and Chitral have operated on and off, but they are very weather-dependent and frequently cancelled. Treat them as a bonus, not a plan.

To the Kalash valleys

From Chitral town, a road leads south-west to Ayun and then splits for Bumburet, Rumbur and Birir. It takes roughly 1–1.5 hours to Bumburet, which has the most guesthouses.

Registration and fees

Foreign visitors are usually required to register and a tourist fee may apply in the Kalasha valleys. Pakistani visitors should carry their CNIC. Requirements can change, so check before you travel.

When to go
