Snowfall in Murree is one of the most popular winter attractions in Pakistan — and one of the most dangerous when handled badly. In January 2022, heavy snow and huge traffic jams left many vehicles stranded, and a number of people died, many from carbon-monoxide poisoning in stuck cars. Since then, authorities have introduced restrictions and advisories. A good snow trip is possible with planning.
In this guide
When does Murree get snow?
Snow typically falls between December and February, with the heaviest and most reliable snowfall in January and early February. It varies each year, and heavy snowfall can come without long warning.
Before you leave
- Check official advisories from weather services, the motorway police and local authorities. Entry to Murree may be restricted in heavy snow.
- Avoid weekends during snow forecasts — traffic multiplies.
- Book accommodation in advance. Do not plan to find a hotel on arrival.
- Do not go if the forecast is severe — postpone.
Safe winter driving
- Use a vehicle suited for snow with good tyres and carry snow chains.
- Fill the fuel tank before heading up.
- Drive in daylight and plan to be settled in your hotel by afternoon.
- Never sleep in a parked car with the engine running — carbon monoxide can build up if the exhaust is blocked by snow. If you must wait, keep a window slightly open and clear the exhaust pipe.
- Carry blankets, water, snacks, a torch, a power bank and a first-aid kit.
