The red pagoda roofs reflected in still green water: that is the picture most people have in mind when they think of Skardu. It is Shangrila Resort on Lower Kachura Lake — a garden resort and one of Baltistan’s best-known stops.

What is Shangrila?
Shangrila is a lakeside resort built in a Chinese-inspired style, with a landmark pagoda-roofed restaurant over the water, gardens and cottages. The lake it sits on is Lower Kachura Lake, set in a bowl of poplar and apricot trees below snow-capped peaks.
How to reach it
Lower Kachura is roughly 25 km from Skardu town — about 30–40 minutes by road. It is usually combined with Upper Kachura Lake, a little further along, where you can take a boat ride across a deep, clear lake.
Day visit or overnight stay?
| Day visit | Overnight | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Short trips and groups | Couples, photography and slow travel |
| What you get | Gardens, lunch or tea, lake views | Sunrise and sunset by the water, quiet evenings |
| Note | Entry and facility rules for day visitors vary; check on arrival | Book early in summer — rooms near the water go first |
Best time of year
- May–June: green and fresh, fewer visitors.
- July–August: warm, busy, long evenings.
- October: golden poplars and the best reflections.
- Winter: very cold; the resort may be closed and the lake edges can freeze.
Photography tips
Go early in the morning for the calmest water and softest light. Walk a little way around the lake for different angles of the pagoda. Mid-morning light flattens the colours; late afternoon often brings a golden glow.
What to combine it with
- Upper Kachura Lake (boat ride and trout lunch).
- The other highlights of Skardu: Katpana, Shigar and Satpara.
- The Skardu itinerary shows how to fit it in 3, 5 or 7 days.
For more on the region, see our Skardu guide.

Things to know before you go
