Khaplu is the second jewel of Baltistan after Skardu — a green valley along the Shyok River with a palace, an ancient mosque and, beyond, mountains that rank among the biggest on earth. It is about 2.5–3 hours from Skardu, a long but rewarding drive.
In this guide
Khaplu Palace
Also called Yabgo Khar, the palace was built in the mid-19th century for the Raja of Khaplu. Restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, it is now a heritage hotel and museum with carved timber balconies and sweeping views. Even if you do not stay, visiting for tea in the courtyard is a highlight.
Chaqchan Mosque
One of the oldest mosques in Baltistan, Chaqchan dates back to the 14th century. Its timber structure blends Tibetan, Kashmiri and Central Asian influences, and its carved wooden galleries are strikingly beautiful. Visit respectfully, remove shoes where required and ask before taking photographs inside.

- Hushe Valley — further up, with views of the Masherbrum range.
- The Shyok River — dramatic scenery along much of the route.
