K2, at 8,611 m, is the second-highest mountain on earth. The trek to its base camp — through Skardu, Askole and across the Baltoro Glacier — is one of the great treks in the world, and one of the hardest. This overview is for travellers deciding whether it is right for them.
This is a serious expedition-style trek at high altitude and remote terrain. It requires proper preparation, permits, experienced guides and a licensed trekking operator. It is not a casual holiday.
In this guide
The route in brief
- Fly or drive to Skardu and prepare permits and supplies.
- Drive to Askole, the last village (about 7–8 hours by jeep, via Shigar).
- Trek along the Baltoro Glacier through Paiju, Urdukas and Goro to Concordia, where K2 and Broad Peak come into view.
- Continue to K2 Base Camp.
How long does it take?
Allow roughly three weeks including travel and rest days. The trek itself usually takes around 8 days up and 6–8 days down, with acclimatisation days.
Season
June to August is the usual window, when the glacier is passable and weather is most stable. Outside this, conditions are dangerous.
Difficulty
| Factor | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Altitude | Camps above 4,500 m; K2 Base Camp around 5,000 m+ |
| Terrain | Rocky moraine, glacier travel, river crossings |
| Weather | Cold, wind and sudden storms |
| Fitness | High; prior multi-day high-altitude trekking experience recommended |
Permits and operators
Permits for the Central Karakoram National Park and restricted areas are required, and trekking is normally organised through licensed operators with guides, cooks and porters. Always check current requirements with the relevant authorities and your operator.
Preparing
- Build endurance with long hikes and altitude experience beforehand.
- Carry proper gear: layered clothing, a good sleeping bag, boots and trekking poles.
- Get a medical check and travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and evacuation.
- Understand altitude risks — read our altitude sickness guide.
If you want mountains without the expedition
You can still enjoy Baltistan’s scenery from the road: lakes, forts, Deosai and the Shigar Valley. See things to do in Skardu, or contact us to plan the Skardu portion of a trip around your trekking dates.
What a typical itinerary looks like
| Phase | Typical length |
|---|---|
| Travel to Skardu and preparation | 2–3 days |
| Drive to Askole | 1 day |
| Trek to Concordia and K2 Base Camp | 8–10 days |
| Return trek | 6–8 days |
| Rest or contingency | 2–3 days |
Costs and logistics to expect
Costs depend on operator, group size, porters, permits, equipment and duration. Beyond fees, plan for travel insurance with evacuation cover, personal gear and tips. Always request an itemised quote from a licensed operator.
Environmental and cultural respect
- Carry out all rubbish; the Baltoro region is fragile.
- Respect porters: check weights, equipment and pay fairly.
- Follow local guidance on camping and water sources.
