Ratti Gali Lake is a high alpine lake at roughly 3,700–3,800 m above the upper Neelum Valley. Fed by glaciers, it sits in a rocky bowl with snow slopes and — in July and August — carpets of wildflowers around it.

The trek
The usual starting point is Dowarian. From there, local jeeps climb a rough track to a road-head, and a trek of several hours leads up to the lake. The route is steady and rocky rather than technical, but altitude and cold make it tiring for first-timers.
| Stage | Details |
|---|---|
| Dowarian to road-head | Jeep, about 1–2 hours on a rough track |
| Road-head to the lake | Walk of several hours, depending on fitness |
| Return | Same route; plan to be back before dark |
When to go
The lake is typically snowbound and partly frozen until late June or early July. July to September is the most reliable window. Monsoon showers can make the track muddy and hazardous, so watch the forecast.

What makes the lake special
Ratti Gali is set in a high bowl of rock and snow with glacial water. In midsummer the surrounding meadows bloom, giving a brief burst of colour that contrasts with the stark slopes.
Good to know
- Do not rely on mobile signal.
- Check the track and snow conditions before setting off.
- Wear sturdy shoes; wet rock can be slippery.
